In 1998, Pablo Bachelet interviewed Gustavo Cisneros for AmericaEconomía. The resulting article, “Ciudadano Cisneros” (“Citizen Cisneros”) made the cover of the magazine, and the idea of a biography was born.

During the following three years, Bachelet conducted intense investigative work, including three interviews with Gustavo Cisneros. The first one, in La Romana, lasted 14 hours; the second one, in Caracas, 6 hours, and the last one, 5 hours, flying from Sao Paulo to Caracas. In addition, Pablo Bachelet interviewed over 100 close associates, friends and business partners of Gustavo Cisneros, producing more than 130 hours of recordings.

Bachelet also read 83 Gustavo Cisneros’ speeches, consulted 275 press articles, revised 32 tomes of corporate materials and more than 3,000 photos.
